In The South Seas Robert Louis Stevenson 9781463726447 Books Reviews
great
This is interesting for a first hand account of the south seas in Stevensons time. From an author who was there to learn rather than just exploit the islands.
Like a documentary...precise, and such a perspective of true island life in the 1800s....
this is a great read - the introduction is very long, &, of course, all the comments are out of context, so can be a little confusing. the book itself is more fun to read
Really, this book made me want to turn my back on old Norway and become a Pacific Wanderer for all future. Stevensons prose is magnificent, persnal, witty, earnest and serious, and what's more, he is a rare example of a Victorian gentleman who met people with plain friendliness and curiosity and respect, which makes you trust everything he says about the King of Apemama, everyday life on Butaritari or cannibalism in the Marquesas Islands. Enjoy it!
The style of writing takes a little getting used to but it's worth while persevering. When you consider that RLS was seeing the South Pacific in the early days after its discovery. Many customs were still in practice that are gone today such as tribal wars, polygamy, ancestor worship and cannibalism. But he paints a vivid picture of the natural beauty of the islands and he renders some of the characters he met with genuine fondness. So it's an experience of seeing through his eyes during that time.
I think it would be a useful addition if a glossary of some of the unusual words and meanings be included for today's reader.
Recommended for those interested in anthropology, literature and travel.
I picked this up as I am a frequent traveler to Polynesia & have adopted the islands as a second home. I was intending it to be an almost "required reading" type read. What it was, as Stevenson's end of life memoir of his travels is an amazingly modern feeling record of his travels that is almost blog like and fresh despite being nearly two centuries old. It reads almost like something you'd see a modern travel writer like Bourdain do & perhaps Stevenson affected much of his style, who knows. But a great read and a great surprise for me.
