1978 The wave of gentrification has yet to break over downtown Los Angeles, and vast swathes of the warehouse district lie nearly abandoned by the sterile trench of the city's concrete-clad river.

Lenny Strasser, a straight-arrow type with a taste for shady places, plunges into that world to discover that sometimes the only distance between two points is a very crooked line. When Lenny's friend Dave Larrabee nags him into helping him track down a missing girlfriend, Lenny suspects that the girl doesn't want to be found. He knows her all too well she was his before she was Dave's, and she'd gone gleefully missing from his life one time too many. Worse, he's not entirely sure he's over his feelings for the theatrical and self-centered Kate.

But this time it wasn't one of her ordinary infidelities--she may have fallen, again, into the hands of the charismatic Nighthawk, who could lead her into territories where the danger is real and role-playing no protection from harm.

The quest takes them into hobo jungles and punk squats by the LA River--and into an after-midnight darkness of moral ambiguity that changes Lenny's life in ways he'd never dreamed of.

I often read a book for the just the plot or for the language or some other single reason. The thing is I usually only read it once, capture what I've come for and leave. Once in a while I'm so captivated that I'll return years later and re read the book, to read slower and savor more than the first time. Once in a long long while I'll start to reread a book as soon as I finish. I did that with The Dust Will Answer. I'm in the middle of my second read now, who knows maybe there will be a third? It's a very fine book. I particularly like the sense of Los Angeles it gives. I was born in LA, and spent what might be called the formative years of my life there. Some 55 years. People have a love and degrade feel for the city: I love where I live, my life; but LA is terrible. Richard captures this very well. His pace and language are both very fine. I will recommend this book to others, especially those who ask me about what it's like to live in LA. Thanks for the fabulous read!

The Dust Will Answer edition by Richard Risemberg Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Don't be fooled by the first few chapters.

Two friends meet for coffee, complete with detailed descriptions of the neighborhood, and social commentary that made me think this would be just like the author's nonfiction work. If you think the same, you're in for a surprise.

Pretty soon the characters are off on a dangerous quest through crime-ridden Los Angeles of the 1980s, searching for a missing girlfriend who should probably just remain missing. It's obvious the two main characters would be better off without her, and at least one of them knows this. Richard Risemberg keeps you eager to find out what will happen next, and there were definitely many times I caught myself reading "just another chapter" when I should have been doing something else.

Some things about the setting are a bit hard to swallow--most of the homeless people speak French, and only the good guys have guns. But it's supposed to be fiction, and it's well-worth stretching your imagination a bit.

I almost gave this four stars instead of five, because the narrator is kind of an ass. Even while there's danger all around, he can't seem to resist making snarky comments about the scenery and the people. He's especially critical of pretentious young writers and film-makers, even though he's just a slightly older and tamer version of these people himself. The constant commentary about gentrification and the changing neighborhoods in L.A. can be a bit much.

But this also makes him more believable as a protagonist. I wound up caring enough about him to find out what was going to happen next, even though there were many times I wanted to shout, "Just get on with the story, man. There's a one-eyed giant with a crowbar right behind you!"

Besides being a great story, The Dust Will Answer is also an education in L.A. history. If you're relatively new to L.A., like I am, you'll see a few things that look vaguely familiar, and you'll learn a lot about how things got the way they are.

I highly recommend this book. It's a fun, engaging story and it will give you something to think about, too.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Dust Will Answer as a companion during a recent vacation. The author does a great job of developing the characters and weaving together a twisting plot that keeps the pages turning. I'm not a bookworm, but this intriguing novel leaves me looking forward to Risemberg's sequel.
In his book “The Dust Will Answer”, author Richard Risemberg has opened a door to a place, a time, characters, and events…all richly, intriguingly described. Once through the door, I found myself very much an enthusiastic “fellow-traveler” in the story, so wonderfully vivid are all the portrayals. Very satisfying, and so effectively transportive, I felt I could have brushed that Los Angeles dust off my hands when I finished. A marvelous story!
I'm giving this 4 stars only because I haven't finished the book yet. I'm loving it so far. Very L.A.
I'm getting drawn in to the characters in a rich, interesting way. It doesn't seem artificial at all. It doesn't seem like fiction.
I don't know where we are going but I am excited to be along for the ride.
"You again."

That should be the alternate title.

Risemberg's novel moves us through the grimy reality of Los Angeles during the Tom Bradley era; seeing the world through the eyes of an educated young man on the hunt (unbeknownst to him) for a Woman and not the lost girl he spends his time looking for. The protagonist is an adrift journalist doing anything but working on a story.

A gun, motorcycles, punk rockers, drugs, money, porn, homeless shanty towns, the RTD, beer, the dirty old LA River, and some off hand use of French and Spanish to glide us to a big fat doggy style ending. Oh, and one reference to some untrimmed toe nails that are now my singular method of sussing out who's the villain and who's the good guy in a Risemberg book.

It's not raunchy in the telling, but when you sit down and think about it, I dare you not to start thinking dirty thoughts. This is a kick ass adventure a story of a half-man/half-dweeb boy who dumps romantic love for the real thing in this gloriously, twisted, messed up city.

The dialogue between characters can be a little unreal at times, but that is part of the fun. The characters don't fall into clean stereotypes, and some that we spend time with and are introduced early get dropped as the story works towards its conclusion.

Net result? A nice smirk, some great perspective on the LA-that-was in the later quarter of the 20th century and a desire to meet a nice Italian girl and settle down.
